(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Secretary of State driver services facilities reopened this week after a closure related to the recent COVID surge.
The facilities, where people typically renew licenses and license plates, among other transactions, had been closed since Jan. 3.
Spokesperson Henry Haupt said facilities that operate Monday through Friday re-opened today, while Tuesday-Saturday bureaus will re-open tomorrow.
Haupt says there’s still no rush to get your driver’s license if it’s expired because drivers have until March 31, under an extension the office has granted.
To prevent overcrowding or long lines, 16 facilities require residents to make an appointment. Several types of people may visit on a walk-in basis: seniors, the disabled, expectant mothers and military veterans.
Another 12 driver services facilities are operating on a walk-in basis for everyone.
Many services, such as getting a new license plate sticker and, in some cases, renewing your driver’s license or state ID, may be done online.
Haupt said facilities will require masks to be worn and will enforce physical distancing guidelines.
“Whatever facility you go to, just keep in mind that we limit the number of people inside a facility at one time, so if you see a line outside the facility, often that’s part of the reason,” he said.
