(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Firefighters in Des Plaines believe a kitchen fire on Monday may have been caused by a hungry dog.

It appears plastic containers left on top of a stove were ignited in a home on Manor Court, Des Plaines Fire Chief Daniel Anderson said.

"It appears that a loose dog turned the stovetop on when it was jumping and trying to gain access to the food that was on top of the stove," Anderson said.

As a result, the plastic containers on top of the stove melted and caught on fire. The fire then spread to the bottom of the microwave and reached parts of the nearby cabinets, he said.

Anderson says firefighters quickly put out the blaze and rescued three dogs from the home, including the one that may have started the fire.

He said a woman who lives in the home was treated for minor smoke inhalation.
