
JOLIET, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 29-year-old man is behind bars in Will County after a weekend traffic crash and a response that would not win anyone a "Father-of-the-Year" award.
Christopher Hernandez, 29, is being held on $250,000 bond after causing a traffic crash and then allegedly abandoned his 10-year-old son.
According to Joliet police, Christopher Hernandez was responsible for triggering a four-vehicle crash Saturday evening at Plainfield Road and Hennepin Drive.
Police said Hernandez's 10-year-old son was in the car with him, and after the crash, Hernandez took off with the boy on-foot. He carried him to a nearby store, where he then dropped the boy off and fled.
The boy was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center with a broken leg.
Hernandez was later tracked down and arrested. After being treated at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Hernandez was transported to the Will County jail, police said.
According to jail records, Hernandez was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, driving under the influence, resisting police, causing a child to be injured, and causing an accident involving injury or death.
Hernandez appeared in court Sunday, and his bond was set at $250,000. He was scheduled to appear in court again Wednesday.
According to Joliet police, the occupants of the other three vehicles were uninjured.
