(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A DuPage County-owned nursing home is set for a major facelift that officials say is long overdue.

The DuPage Care Center in Wheaton has not undergone a major renovation in some three decades, and Administrator Janelle Chadwick says now is the time.

“The key equipment that we use for life safety and mechanical systems are reaching their use for life,” she said. “The fire system was last upgraded over 20 years ago, and the piping is the original to installation. We are finding that repairs are no longer an option and some equipment replacement is needed.”

Following a presentation to the DuPage County board this week, members agreed to move forward with a major renovation project that could cost upwards of $31 million.

Chadwick said the goal is to make the facility more modern, inviting and safe for its 300 residents.

“It will enhance the quality of life and environment for our residents. It will improve the public image of a government-owned facility. It will instill a greater sense of pride for our employees and help recruitment.”

The county could break ground as early as January.
