(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — DuPage County is seeing a rise in COVID cases, especially in one particular age group, prompting a health official to advise caution when it comes to large gatherings.

For about a month, DuPage has seen a sustained rise in coronavirus, with about 480 new cases a day now. The health department’s director of community health resources, Chris Hoff, said more of those cases are among people under 19.

He said he strongly encourages people to wear masks indoors and — as the Mother’s Day weekend arrives — weigh their risks before getting together for large gatherings.

“It’s a good time to think about the steps you can take to reduce risk. We know there’s not any such thing as zero risk. Thankfully, these vaccines have given us really good protection against severe illness and death,” Hoff said.

Fortunately, he adds, the higher case numbers are not resulting in dramatically more hospitalizations.
