
Durbin met with the local Ukrainian, Polish and Baltic communities to discuss continuing U.S. support.
He urged local leaders to continue their visibility campaigns and discussions, along with contacting members of the House of Representatives, where a bi-partisan Senate bill sits blocked from a vote in Congress.
“I’m frustrated now because Congress is frozen,” Durbin said. “We announced with great pride that we kept the lights on in the government for another month. For goodness sakes, is that as good as it gets? It’s like saying, ‘the best thing I can tell you is I paid all my utility bills in my home.' Well, what about the hole in your roof? What have you done about that?’”
This too applies to humanitarian aid for Gaza. The senator is appalled by attempts to air drop supplies. He said that the U.S. effort needs to be much more organized.
The stall in Congress also comes as the Senate has a bi-partisan package ready to go on security for the U.S. southern border.
He blames the delay on pressure coming from the Freedom Caucus and former President Donald Trump’s opposition to the assistance.
“I think President Trump, who said, ‘blame him for it,’ is right. He should be blamed,” Durbin said.
