(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin on Friday said the United States must continue supporting Ukraine and even take it a step further.
Durbin spoke at un unrelated event on the edge of Ukrainian Village as the world marked the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
“Our experts sat down with us more than a year ago, a few days before this anniversary, and told us the sad news: that Ukraine would fall, that the capital would fall into the hands of Vladimir Putin and the Russians within five days,” Durbin recalled.
“The experts were wrong. They completely failed to measure the determination and courage of the Ukrainian people to defend their own homes and families.”
Durbin said U.S. equipment, ammunition and training are the making the difference. He said he would support equipping Ukraine with fighter jets.
“But you need to train the pilots. It takes months to do that, so that they can use these F-16s effectively.”
