(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As in many parts of the city, the backdrop in Edgewater is crime, homelessness and closing storefronts. But those who have a vested interest in Bryn Mawr Avenue are looking on the sunny side of the street by promoting the winter holiday market that begins this weekend.

They’re calling it the Winter Bryn Mawrkets because it’s centered, of course, on Bryn Mawr.

“I think many people in this community consider Bryn Mawr the heart of this community, and so I think it’s an area that people want to continue to see activations and new businesses and activity on,” says Christina Pfitzinger, executive director of the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce.

Two vacant storefronts in the 1000 block of Bryn Mawr are turning into pop-up showcases for eight different stores and a gallery for a handful of artists.

Pfitzinger says those storefronts are next to two permanent businesses that have opened in the past few months.

The Winter Bryn Mawrkets starts Friday. It will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons and runs through mid-February.
