CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Workers at El Milagro tortilla production facilities in the Little Village neighborhood walked off the job Thursday with a long list of demands and they claim management illegally locked them out.
The workers walked out and picketed saying they’re protesting unsafe conditions, low pay, a heavy workload, and sexual harassment, among other things.
After their walk-out, when workers at the 21st Place and Western Ave plant attempted to return, they were unlawfully locked out. Supervisors refused workers entry to return to work, and refused entry to get personal belongings, including car and home keys and medicines. This, as the company struggles to meet demand for its products.
The employees are not unionized, but they are organizing with help from Arise Chicago. A leader of the non-profit said 85 El Milagro workers have had COVID-19 and five have died. She blamed unsafe working conditions.
The company has not commented.
The workers are attempting to meet with management later Friday morning.
