(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An exhibition on the "House of Tomorrow" from the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago debuts this weekend at the Elmhurst Art Museum.
John McKinnon, the museum's executive director, says the House of Tomorrow had several innovations that are now common in homes, though not all of the predictions were correct.
“There were new appliances, such as a dishwasher that was built into your kitchen, that were going to make things much easier for your life,” he said Friday. “However, not everything was as they predicted. A garage was supposed to house your airplane because everyone was going to fly their own personal airplanes in the future.”
McKinnon says the House of Tomorrow also featured many "green" innovations, including using the sun to help heat and light the home.
One goal of the current exhibition is to inspire people to make their own homes more environmentally friendly, he said.
The House of Tomorrow exhibition runs through May 29.
