(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - One of the largest health systems in the Chicago area is spending almost half a billion dollars to settle sex abuse claims against a former doctor.

Endeavor Health has not specified who the doctor is, but its financial statement released Monday said it’s spending up to $453 million dollars to settle patient claims of sexual abuse.

The Chicago Tribune reported it’s Dr. Fabio Ortega, a former OB-GYN who has 61 lawsuits against him by former patients. They accuse him of inappropriate exams and questions during appointments at NorthShore University HealthSystem and Swedish Hospital, which are now a part of Endeavor.

The suits also accuse the hospital systems of failing to protect them from Ortega, even after other patients complained.

The paper said Ortega has been stripped of his license and was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing two patients in 2021.

Endeavor declined to comment on a pending legal matter.
