(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Local environmental groups held an emergency meeting Thursday after a Chicago alderman proposed a zoning measure that would allow for mining in Chicago.
Many said they believe the move by 10th Ward Ald. Peter Chico is intended to support a massive industrial undertaking on the Southeast Side along the Calumet River.
Amalia Nieto Gomez of the Alliance of the Southeast said residents welcome development and investment in their communities, but not at the expense of health. She said Chico’s proposed zoning amendment would impact the entire city.
“We should not have mining next to our homes, our schools, our parks and our grocery stores,” Nieto Gomez said.
Ald. Maria Hadden, 49th, who chairs the Committee on Environmental Protection and Energy, tells the Sun Times said she’ll want to scrutinize the proposal.
