(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Voters in Evanston have overwhelmingly approved a measure to implement "ranked choice" voting in city elections.
Unofficial results show voters approved the plan by a four-to-one margin.
Under the ranked choice system, voters can list the candidates they support in order of preference. Some hopefuls may be eliminated, with their votes going to alternative candidates, until a winner emerges.
The new system would take effect in Evanston with the April, 2025 local elections.
Last year, New York City became the most populous jurisdiction to adopt a ranked choice system. Alaska also used ranked choice in its recent Congressional election.
