EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Community members in Evanston weighed in on the Israel-Hamas war at a city commission meeting Thursday night.
The measure is called "Resolution Affirming the City's Support for a Ceasefire and the Return of Israeli and Palestinian Hostages."
It was introduced by the Evanston Equity and Empowerment Commission.
One hundred and thirty people signed up to comment at the contentious and emotional meeting, according to CBS 2.
"Acknowledging the suffering of the Palestinian people, and outlining documented violations of international law – as is done in this resolution," one attendee said.
However, another woman said: "With this extremely one-sided document that has a litany of the suffering of the Palestinians, and no discussion of the suffering of the Israeli people."
This is not the first time this commission has taken a stance on conflicts abroad. CBS 2 reports that the commission previously called for an end to the war in Iraq and other wars.
Commissioners said they will consider feedback from the public, and meet with city lawyers to discuss what they can do next.
