EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Evanston Township High School is taking a long break from in-person education following the discovery of guns at the school on Thursday, but the superintendent says it’s about COVID.

In a letter to students and parents, Superintendent Eric Whitherspoon called it an “adaptive pause” that is “intended to reduce the transmission of COVID.”

This comes a day after the discovery of two guns at the school. Police Commander Ryan Glew said eight students were taken into custody.

"Today could have been tragic, but for the quick response and the brave actions of our police officers and the safety personnel at ETHS," said Interim City Manager Kelly Gandurski on Thursday.

Evanston students won’t be back in classrooms until January 10. The winter break follows the “adaptive pause.” The Evanston City Council is having a special meeting on violence on Monday evening.
