(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Police in north suburban Evanston say after a newborn baby girl died, her teenage mother tried to conceal the death.

Last August, Evanston police say 19-year-old Layarria Searcy gave birth to the baby girl at her home in the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue, but the baby died shortly afterward.

Investigators say Searcy did not report the death, and the baby's remains were discarded in a garbage receptacle.

Police say they couldn't find the remains, and without them, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office was unable to determine how the baby died.

Prosecutors have charged Searcy with a felony count of concealment of a death.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to reach out to the Evanston Police Department at 847-866-5040.
