Evers expected to veto bills that ban transgender sports participation, prohibit vaccine proof

MADISON, Wisc. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is expected to veto Republican sponsored legislation concerning vaccine passports and transgender sports participation.

The vaccine legislation would prohibit businesses, employers, schools, and basically anyone from requiring proof of a vaccine.

Republican Representative Tyler August said it is about individual rights.

"You shouldn't have to divulge that to government or business just to go about and participate in everyday life like everyone else," he said.

Another bill would ban transgender athletes from participation in women's sports at K-12 schools and college campuses.

"Women have a right to competitive sports where they have a decent shot to win, as opposed to being uncompetitive, because a biological man who made a decision to compete in women's sports," said Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos.

Wisconsin State Assembly Democratic Minority Leader Gordon Hintz said the Republican continue to "pack the agenda" with issues that "press buttons."

"The sensational, hot bottom distraction issues out there that keep coming up that are kind of the national playbook for Republicans - get attention that perhaps motivate the base, as a way to distract from the bigger decisions that impact the state," he said.

Governor Tony Evers is expected to veto both the vaccination and transgender bills.
