CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A former Chicago Police sergeant has pleaded guilty to charges related to the sexual assault of a transgender woman in 2019.

Sixty-five-year-old James Sajdak has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor civil rights charges. He had been facing up to life in prison, but the plea deal means he could be sentenced to probation, avoiding jail time, but he's still facing the possibility of a year in federal prison.

He'd been accused of forcing a trans woman to have sex with him in his squad car parked on the West Side. The plea agreement said Sajdak, in uniform, in a marked squad car,  "locked the car doors, closed his police laptop, and turned off his police radio." She went to authorities and later sued the city.

Sentencing is set for February 23.
