MCHENRY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The former president of a girls softball league in McHenry has been arrested and charged with stealing from the league’s bank account.
Board members of the McHenry Pigtail League went to police after noticing that money was missing and couldn’t be accounted for.
Following what police call an extensive investigation, the former president, 37-year-old Natalie Phelps, was arrested and charged with one count of theft over $10,000. That’s a class 2 felony.
That could bring a sentence of three to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.
It's alleged that Phelps stole about $16,000.
“Non-profit organizations such as the McHenry Pigtail League are vital to the community. The league provides children with skills, character, sportsmanship and community spirit,” McHenry Police Chief John Birk said in a statement.
He went on to say the police department is committed to investigating anyone that takes advantage of non-profit organizations.
