CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Rideshare drivers rallied at Chicago City Hall on Wednesday in support of former Uber and Lyft driver Ceresa Cohran.
“In April, I was wrongfully terminated for something I did not do,” Cohran said.
Cohran is suing Uber, Lyft and the city of Chicago after she was deactivated from the rideshare apps for allegedly spitting on a passenger, which she said is not true.
“That's assault,” she said. “I've never assaulted anyone ever, so it was crazy. My life being turned around, and they wouldn't even really hear me out.”
Cohran said she was deactivated without proper investigation or due process, with the City of Chicago’s rules enabling the deactivation — and depriving her of the ability to earn a living.
“I just now found employment last month, almost lost my house,” Cohran said. “I'm still, to this day, without a car, in a hole and trying to find a way to dig myself out and, basically, rebuild my life.”
Her lawsuit challenges the Chicago ordinance that requires platforms to report driver deactivations to other companies. Cohran said this leads to arbitrary enforcement and denies drivers the opportunity to defend themselves, which is what she's demanding now.
“To be reinstated, possibly, to be reimbursed on my livelihood,” she said. “Everything has changed for me now.”
