CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Temperatures may be on the chilly side today but nothing says spring or summer like Opening Day and today’s the day at Wrigley Field as the Cubs open their season against the Milwaukee Brewers.
In a show of solidarity with the people of Ukraine, the Ukrainian American Youth Association Choir will sing the Ukrainian national anthem before today’s Cubs game. Ukrainian flags will also fly around the ballpark. Cubs Hall of Famers Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, Ryne Sandberg, Andre Dawson, and Lee Smith will throw out the ceremonial first pitches.
“We’re really excited. I mean, it’s the first time since 2019 that we’ve had a real Opening Day with a full ballpark and so it’s exciting to have fans back. It feels, feels real normal,” said Cubs executive Colin Faulkner.
The Cubs are also trying a couple of vendor-less concession stands. Cameras will see what you’re buying and a device will tell you what you owe.
Fans will enter Wrigley by way of paperless tickets.
“There’s no more screenshots or printouts or anything like that. It’s all really through the Ballpark App, and that has also sped the entry into the ballpark, along with our new evolved technology, where you do not have to take out your wallet or your keys, or your cell phone or anything. You can literally just walk through,” said Faulkner
As for Cubs player statues, they’re being put in a row this season in Gallagher Way as opposed to all around the ballpark. The Fergie Jenkins statue is supposed to be unveiled later this spring. The Harry Caray statue will remain at the corner of Waveland and Sheffield.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:20 p.m.
