(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A security expert believes he knows why it's taken so long for Lurie Children's Hospital to recover from a presumed cyber attack.

A spokesperson for Lurie said the hospital’s response to a "cybersecurity matter" included taking network systems, such as phones, email and electronic records, offline last week.

Enzo Scafidi, vice president of operations at Access One, a Chicago-based cybersecurity firm, said the hospital is isolating remaining threats before restoring the systems.

“Lurie took the proper precautions,” he said. “They cut off access to the outside world, which is what you want to do in a situation like this. You want to preserve evidence, and you want to eliminate the potential for someone to be able to access your systems.”

Scafidi said it can take days for a hospital the size of Lurie to recover fully and securely from a cybersecurity threat.
