(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Faith leaders gather at a church in the “welcoming city” of Evanston, voicing their support for immigrant protections.

A sign inside the entrance to the Lake Street Church in Evanston reads, “Immigration and Customs Enforcement is not permitted to enter our holy space.”

The multi-denominational church welcomed religious leaders of Christian, Jewish, Sikh, and Muslim faiths – among others – to support a proclamation that the church will be used as a sanctuary for all, including those targeted by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE).

“I'm here and we're all here because our country is in an absolutely dire situation,” said Reverend Michael Woolf.

He proclaimed that his multi-faith Lake Street Church of Evanston will remain a sanctuary for all, and serve as shelter for those targeted by ICE.

“So that those who are in fear know they have a place, a physical structure, God's house, to turn to.”

Imam Sheikh Hassan Aly said the effort will take more than words.

“Declarations alone cannot carry the weight of this mission. It's upon all of us, the people of faith to breathe life into those principles. We must be the hands and efforts that transforms words into actions.”

The effort was supported by Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss.

“Because when those of us who see what justice is about and what this country is supposed to mean are prepared to stand up for that, ultimately in the long term we cannot but be successful.”
