HICKORY HILLS, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A memorial has been left at the site where four young people were killed in a crash over the weekend in south suburban Hickory Hills.
The crash happened in the middle of Saturday afternoon in Hickory Hills on 89th Street at 86th Court. A car slammed into a tree and split in half.
Kenneth Roberts told CBS 2 he had a hard time reaching his 17-year-old son, Nathan Phillips. He ended up having to tell the rest of the family his son was dead.
"They miss him dearly right now. When we broke the news last night, it was devastating," he said.
Phillips was a senior in senior high school who had just gotten a new job, Roberts said.
“Like everything in me wants to just lay down and I just want to cry – but I know if I do that, I’m never going to get up,” Roberts said.
Rachel Grau told CBS 2 she knew two of the victims, Omarion and Jemerrio, who were brothers.
“I knew Jemerrio and Omarion – they were one of my closest friends,” Grau said. “They were always full of joy, and they were always full of laughter; like they were fun to hang around with. Everyone knew them.”
All four who died are believed to have been teenagers. Two others in the car survived.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated, but there are questions why Blue Island police showed up shortly after the crash, when Blue Island is 12 miles away.
