CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than 18 months after Eric Lurry Jr.'s death while in the custody of the Joliet Police Department, his family and allies are still looking for justice.
According to the Joliet Herald News, protesters gathered outside the Will County State's Attorney's office to demand another investigation into Lurry's death. Lurry, who is Black, died of a drug overdose several hours after he was arrested in January 2020.
While he was in Joliet police custody, Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow said Lurry ingested fatal amounts of heroin, fentanyl and cocaine. He died several hours after the arrest.
His widow, Nicole Lurry, is suing the Joliet Police Department for failing to transport him to a medical facility in time. A video of the arrest shows police officers slapping Lurry, holding his nose shut and forcing a baton into his mouth.
Glasgow contended that Lurry's death was not a result of the officers' actions. Earlier this month, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced he will conduct a civil investigation of the Joliet Police Department to search for patterns of unlawful practices.
