CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The register is ringing at Casper's True Value Hardware on Old Rand Road in Lake Zurich.
The driving autumn rain didn't stop people from showing up Thursday for the first hour of the liquidation sale at the family-owned hardware store, which is closing after 56 years and three generations.
Owner John Casper told WBBM Newsradio he's retiring.
“I wasn’t really thinking of retiring. I really enjoy what I do here and helping people out and being a part of the community. But two gentlemen came in and asked if I was interested in selling and, you know, I heard that before. We spoke and what they were coming up with got my attention,” Casper said.
He took that offer to the rest of his family and they agreed to take it. the liquidation sale will run through the end of the year. He said he expects to vacate the building by the end of January.
Casper said he's looking forward to having the time to take more walks, travel and golf.
