(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago area family of a developmentally disabled man is suing the group home where he lived after he suffered debilitating injuries there.
The family of 30-year-old Zack Stankewitz says an employee of the Kankakee group home where Stankewitz lived shot video that they say shows two residents of the home beating Stankewitz in the head with a pillow stuffed with something.
"It's a very horrific, hard thing to watch,” says Micki Koncel-Stankewitz, Zack's mother.
She said her son suffered brain injuries and had more than three dozen other wounds on his body. And yet the Help at Home facility didn't take him to the hospital for six days, she adds.
"My heart shattered. My world shattered. As any mother with a child --how could somebody do this?"
The family's lawsuit against the group home alleges negligence and asks for monetary damages.
"The people that did this to him, they're probably able to go about and do day-to-day functions -- walk, talk, dress themselves and go out and enjoy themselves,” Koncel-Stankewitz said. "My son's life has been changed irrevocably."
Help at Home says it cannot comment on pending litigation.
