(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The shooting death of a 12-year-old girl over the weekend is being called a tragic accident by police in south suburban Hazel Crest.
On Tuesday, they said in a statement it was "another case of young people having access to an unsecured weapon in a home."
The juvenile who fired the gun that killed Erica Gibson will not be charged, following a police investigation and a legal review by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.
Later Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Cook County state’s attorney office said the details of the shooting had not been “formally presented” to the office on whether charges should be filed.
“We are currently reviewing the case to determine if the evidence supports any charges,” the statement said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “We cannot further comment on an ongoing investigation.”
Late Saturday night, police were called to a home on 176th and Arlington Lane where Erica had been shot.
The teenage girl was from the Auburn-Gresham community on Chicago's South Side.
She was taken to South Suburban Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide.
An online fundraiser has been organized to raise funds to help the girl's family.
