CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Six people, who were identified as gang members or associates in federal court, were convicted on Wednesday in the 2020 murder of Chicago rapper FBG Duck.
The rapper’s mother and other family members cried and hugged each other as the verdict was read around 12:35 p.m., closing out a trial that had been marred by delays and had stretched more than three months.
Duck, whose real name was Carlton Weekly, was shot to death while shopping in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood on Aug. 4, 2020. Two other people, including Weekly’s girlfriend, were injured in the shooting.
The jury found that all six men — 32-year-old Charles “C Murda” Liggins, 30-year-old Kenneth Roberson, 32-year-old Tacarlos Offerd, 24-year-old Christopher Thomas, 25-year-old Marcus Smart and 34-year-old Ralph Turpin — conspired to murder Weekly as a way to maintain or increase their positions in their gang.
Jurors found that Liggins was the one who committed the murder of Weekly. Roberson and Offerd were accused of being getaway drivers. Thomas and Smart were accused of acting as gunmen in the shooting.
Turpin was accused of sending the shooters to the Gold Coast to kill Weekly.
“All too often, our residents are held hostage to violence and other dangerous activity on our city streets,” said FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Robert Wheeler. “These convictions show that there are very real consequences for murder in the city of Chicago today, tomorrow, and every day going forward.”
All of the convictions carry mandatory sentences of life in federal prison, officials said. Sentencing will take place between Aug. 6 and Sept. 17.
