GREENWOOD, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The FBI and police in Greenwood, Indiana, outside Indianapolis updated the public Wednesday about a mall shooting in July that left four people dead, including the gunman.
The Police Chief in Greenwood, James Isom, said the shooter’s phone, which was found in a toilet, is in an FBI lab, connected to a program designed to find the code.
"There are approximately one million possible combinations. It could take years to unlock."
He said investigators found that Jonathan Sapirman, 20 told an ex-girlfriend he wouldn’t live past 20 and if he were to kill himself, he’d take others.
He also mentioned that he had an interest in mass shootings and Nazi Germany and that he was racist toward African Americans and Hispanics. The three who died were Hispanic, but Isom said they’ve been unable to establish a clear motive.
"We are unable to determine if he specifically targeted them," he said referring to the victims.
The shooter was killed by a witness within seconds of firing the first shot.
"There was no doubt in my mind that Elijah Dicken saved many lives that night and he is a true hero," said Isom.
