(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In a joint public service alert, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials say they are monitoring the potential for “foreign terrorist organizations to commit or inspire violence against holiday celebrations, including pride events or LGBTQ related venues.”
Chicago is home to one of the oldest and largest pride parades in the nation, which is scheduled for June 30.
The organizers have already altered this year's event by shortening the planned route and beginning the parade at 11 a.m., an hour earlier than usual.
Additionally, the 2024 parade will feature 125 entries, which is about two-thirds smaller than the number of entries in the 2023 parade.
Leaders and organizers have cited “ safety and logistical concerns” for those changes.
Local authorities have yet to comment on the national alert, which does not mention any specific cities or events.
The FBI will, “continue to closely monitor potential threats to public safety and communicate and share information with local state and federal law enforcement partners.”
