CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago and Illinois are getting more federal money to help cover costs associated with housing and assisting migrants.
The City’s share, $10.5 million, falls well short of what then-Mayor Lori Lightfoot had sought to assist the more than 10,000 migrants from Central and South America who have been bussed and flown to Chicago since last summer, mostly from Texas.
The money is coming from FEMA for shelter and support services. The state’s Department of Human Services is getting about $19.4 million. Last month, a divided City Council approved $51 million.
Shelters are full and makeshift shelters are being used and hundreds of migrants continue to live in the lobbies of police stations.
