CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Perch Kitchen and Tap in Wicker Park will be temporarily closed as staff work to repair the building after a fire broke out at the restaurant Sunday, officials with the restaurant said in a statement.

It happened as staff at the Perch were taking care of a nearly full restaurant Sunday evening, when a manager discovered that a fire had broken out on the roof of the building.

Thanks to a quick reaction from the manager and employees — as well as a prompt response from the Chicago Fire Department — officials with the Perch said everyone was safely evacuated from the building.

In its statement, the Perch said the fire started in a rooftop mechanical unit.

CFD has not responded to WBBM’s request for comment.

The restaurant, located on West Division Street near North Damen Avenue, opened in 2020 during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s particularly well known for its brunch, as well as a menu that features dishes from its wood-fired grill and rotisserie. The Perch also brews its own beer on-site.

It’s unclear when exactly the Perch will reopen, but a message on the restaurant's website said it will be closed through Dec. 1.

Officials with the Perch said they “are working to expedite repairs and continue to serve our amazing community of guests.”
