(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Former Bears great Steve “Mongo” McMichael has been hospitalized with an infection, according to a family spokesperson.
McMichael, diagnosed with the nervous system disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, in January of 2021, was admitted Thursday night to the intensive care unit. A spokesperson for the family said he became unconscious with sepsis.
He received IV antibiotics and is now awake, and his vitals have improved.
Last week, McMichael was named one of 12 senior semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
His wife Misty is requesting for fans’ prayers.
“He needs to see himself enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Please pray for him to get through this,” Misty said.
The Seniors Committee will meet August 22 and choose three candidates for final consideration.
McMichael, famed member of the Super Bowl champion ‘85 Bears, played 13 seasons for the franchise and ranks second all-time in team history with 92.5 sacks.
