(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than 1,000 former Northwestern University athletes have signed a letter defending the school’s athletics culture, amid lawsuits over hazing.
The former players condemned hazing of any kind but described an overall athletics culture at Northwestern that “fosters excellence in sports, academics, and community development.”
This open letter — first obtained by ESPN — was signed by former athletes from all of the school’s varsity programs, who wrote that they felt it was important for them “to respond to the recent allegations about NU’s athletics program.”
“We strongly affirm the positive experiences we had at Northwestern and, if offered, would do it all over again,” the letter read.
Right now, Northwestern is facing lawsuits from more than 10 former football players and a former volleyball player. Each plaintiff alleged hazing and other forms of mistreatment.
