(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A former Glendale Heights police officer is accused of using a village-issued credit card for personal use.

A DuPage County grand jury indicted Mark Garcia earlier this week on three counts of official misconduct and two counts of theft.

Prosecutors allege that Garcia used a village-issued credit card to buy gasoline for personal use between February and April of this year.

The alleged misuse of the card was discovered by the Glendale Heights Police Department. The department’s findings were turned over to the State's Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

“Our job as police officers is to uphold the law, and this is a stark reminder that no one is above the law and we are all responsible for our actions,” Glendale Heights Chief of Police George Pappas said.

The announcement about Garcia’s charges did not specify when or why Garcia left his role as an officer with the Glendale Heights Police Department.

Garcia’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 11.
