(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Cook County States Attorney’s Office has launched an initiative that could mean new — likely lighter — sentences for some old criminal convictions.

Kim Foxx said prosecutors will begin making use of a new state law to argue in court that certain longtime inmates deserve more lenient sentences.

She calls it “a way to understand and acknowledge that we’ve evolved in the justice system and how we’ve administered punishment and to make it right for those who are eligible.”

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill last summer that allows prosecutors, at their discretion, to file motions to re-sentence incarcerated persons whose original sentence no longer advances the interests of justice.

The final decision for each case will be up to a judge.
