(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - We could see fewer collisions and delays at some train crossings, thanks to $45 million in federal funding coming to projects in Illinois and Indiana.

The Federal Railroad Administration is directing $8 million to separate train crossings in Franklin Park, and Decatur will get $16 million to build a new bridge or tunnel.

In Indiana, the home state of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Gary will get $4.5 million. Schererville is to receive $8 million, and Hammond will get $7 million to eliminate grade-crossings with Norfolk Southern trains and build an overpass called Governor’s Parkway.

"Every year, commuters, residents, and first responders lose valuable time waiting at blocked railroad crossings – and worse, those crossings are too often the site of collisions that could be prevented,” said Buttigieg in a press release announcing the funds.

The agency reported more than 2,000 collisions last year at highway-rail crossings and more than 30,000 public complaints of blocked crossings.
