(WBBM NEWRADIO) — A Northwestern University professor has some answers about the coronavirus delta variant and the risk to those who are fully vaccinated.

Dr. Mercedes Carnethon, vice chair of preventive medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, said the fully vaccinated should be protected against the delta variant.

Those who experience a so-called breakthrough infection suffer a milder case of the disease.

Fully vaccinated parents of unvaccinated children can still live their life while evaluating the risks of certain behavior, she said. Children should still try to practice common mitigation measures.

"Masking works. Social distancing works, and the good thing about young children is that they're rather adaptable," Dr. Carnethon said.

She said children should be better protected in places where COVID transmission is low.

Some people won't get the vaccine because they say they are concerned about side effects. Dr. Carnethon said tens of millions of people have been vaccinated without incident and the known benefits outweigh the unknown aftereffects of COVID.

She added that news about the delta variant is prompting more people to seek out the vaccine.
