GARY, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The President of the Gary Common Council said there are now "some mutual understandings” with Indiana State Police regarding a revamp of the Gary police department.

The mayor, Jerome Prince, brought the State Police in to look at all aspects of how the police department operates and there has been some push-back in both the department and the council.

The Times of Northwest Indiana reports that 19 ordinances have been introduced concerning a number of issues from police uniforms to giving more authority to the police chief to a new headquarters building with no input from council members.

That’s led to some contentious meetings.

However, after the State Police Director, Doug Carter, met with council members, Council President William Godwin said, most of the council’s concerns have been addressed.
