(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Gary-Chicago Airport Authority has acquired the Griffith-Merrillville airport with an eye toward the growth of both facilities.
The big question many would have is whether this could lead to commercial flights again at the Gary airport.
“Everything the employees at this airport do and everything the board members do is geared towards growing this airport and securing passenger service – so, the answer to your question is yes,” Airport Authority Chairman Pete Visclosky said.
Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said the city would also like to see cargo activity increase.
Griffith-Merrillville is a smaller airport serving smaller aircraft. Growth of the Gary Airport could mean moving some smaller planes there.
The purchase price was $1.8 million.
