GLENVIEW (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Parents and community members filled a school board meeting Tuesday night in north suburban Glenview to debate a quote in the Glenbrook South High School yearbook about the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel.
In the Etruscan yearbook that was distributed last week, there was a quote from a sophomore student saying, "The first day, I woke up and I saw what Palestine did, and I was happy because they're finally defending themselves."
Parent David Talisman told the District 225 Board he was devastated and infuriated by what is now part of the school’s documented history.
“For almost eight months, we’ve seen antisemitic demonstrations on college campuses and lately at high schools,” Talisman said. “This means that GBS had ample time to survey the climate and that they still allow this blatant expression of antisemitism and Jewish hate.”
Other speakers defended the student and the publication.
An attorney with the Council on American Islamic Relations said the student was misrepresented, and her “family affirms that she was not happy about any act that a certain terrorist group did."
The school board apologized and said it’s conducting an investigation, adding the statements are hurtful and will not be condoned or tolerated.
