(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new study finds one of Indiana’s most significant contributors to its economy is golf.

Golf organizations in Indiana have released an impact report-finding the sport contributes over one billion dollars in direct spending to the state and has a total economic impact of over $2 billion.

"I don't think Indiana is alone in that," said Mike David, executive director for Indiana Golf. "I think that's probably somewhat typical across the U.S."

Golf supports more than 23,000 jobs in Indiana. As far as golf participation, Indiana ranks in the top ten. Illinois is there also.

The study also found the industry pays over $612 million dollars in wages and benefits and that golf generates over $810 million in state and local taxes.

David says golf continues to grow in non-traditional ways not imagined a few years ago, like Top Golf and that leads to more people playing the game.
