CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The youth group Good Kids Mad City is inviting young people from around the city to participate in a mayoral town meeting this week.

Good Kids Mad City organizer Miracle Boyd said the youth-oriented forum will be at 5:00 p.m. this Wednesday at Northwestern University’s Law School at East Chicago and the Lakefront. She said Five Mayoral Candidates have agreed to participate.

Five Mayoral hopefuls, Roderick Sawyer, Ja’ Mal Green, Kam Buckner, Sophia King and Brandon Johnson have promised to participate in the Youth Oriented Town Hall meeting.

Lyric Harris, with the Brave Youth Leaders Violence Prevention Program at St. Sabina says they want to hear support for things important to young people.

“Things that we need in our community is free medical help for children under 18 that have been through any sexual trauma and have been raped and pregnant. We need more fixed up parks in our area. They are child hazards. Up north, their parks are clean and big, while ours are small and practically dangerous to play on,” Harris said.

Boyd said the group and others want to hear the candidates' views and plans on the needs of young people for things like violence prevention and mental health treatment.

“We know that the city has a budget specifically allocated to violence prevention but GMKC is not seeing any of that money for the folks who are the most marginalized and deprived of resources in the community or experienced the most violence from the police or…violence period,” Boyd said.

They also say they want the so-called "Peace Book" Ordinance approved. Her group proposes shifting some money from the police budget to spend on preventing violence.
