CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The stormy weather is impacting local air travel.
A full ground stop was issued at both O’Hare and Midway Airports earlier this morning, lasing for more than an hour. Due to the strong thunderstorms, all inbound and outbound flights are on hold. The stop was lifted at 7:30 a.m. at Midway and shortly thereafter at O'Hare.
Delays and cancellations have been elevated as well. As of 9:45 a.m., 21 flights have been canceled at O’Hare, with an average delay time of 21 minutes. While at Midway, the average delay is less than 15 minutes, with 16 flights called off.
Today’s weather is expected to be turbulent all day long. Several lines of storms, some possibly strong, are expected to move through this morning. The National Weather Service says the strongest thunderstorms may produce damaging winds and hail.
Another round of storms is slated for this afternoon, with the heaviest project for the area south of Kankakee.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WBBM Newsradio for an update.
