(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Taking the phrase “sharing is caring” to a new level, a Chicago organization is getting supplies into the hands of parents who need them.

"It's our mission to ensure every child has the essential items they need to thrive in the first five years of life," says Alex Goodfellow, Executive Director of Share Our Spare Chicago. "That means anything from diapers, wipes and formula to clothing, winter gear, books and beyond."

Since 2011, Share Our Spare has been partnering with local organizations to help support parents of young children. Goodfellow said diapers alone can be $70 or $80 a month per child.

One in three children do not have an adequate supply of diapers, she said.

"Mother or father, there's no caregiver out there that doesn't want to provide their children with everything in the world. Even if you don't have the means, you still want to give your child everything you possibly can so that they can be successful, healthy and happy."

By providing these really basic, essential items, we're giving that child a leg up to success for further down the road."
