(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Community groups were at City Hall Wednesday demanding Mayor Lightfoot follow through on what they say is the long-overdue establishment of a citizen oversight board for the Chicago Police Department.
One year ago, an ordinance passed setting up a civilian commission to oversee police policies and practices. Despite several promises, members of the panel have yet to be named.
Frank Chapman, organizer for the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, said promises have been broken for when that commission would be formed. They were first told the commission would be named in December, then February, then April. It’s now July.
The various groups would also like to see commission members eventually elected by the public.
Lightfoot, asked Wednesday about the criticisms, said her administration is still vetting candidates submitted by aldermen. She would not commit to any particular timeline in establishing the panel.
