CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dozens of pro-abortion activists made their voices heard Saturday, as they protested the ban of a popular abortion drug.

“Hands off the abortion pill,” the  protesters throughout downtown Chicago.

In Federal Plaza, the sound of drums and the voices of activists was booming. Their demands: that access be restored to Mifepristone, a drug used in more than 50% of abortions across the U.S.

The future of Mifepristone remains up in the air, after a decision by a Texas judge to reverse the FDA's approval of the drug.

“It’s hard to think about what they’re faced with because they won’t be able to make their own decisions about their bodies, about whether they get pregnant … I mean, this could go further,” said Phyllis Rubin, from River Forest, who brought a sign that said "for my grandchildren."

Aurie Pennick is a retired civil rights attorney.

“Reproductive rights are civil rights, be they a pill or an abortion,” Pennick said. “I felt, when that happened, the same way I felt when they tried to undo the voting rights bill. This is all interconnected for me, as a woman of color and a civil rights attorney.”

Michelle Trudel, a Chicago resident, said it’s a matter of human rights.

“No one should be forced to go through a pregnancy or childbirth against their will,” she said.
