ELGIN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois State Board of Education has named its new State Superintendent of Education, and he comes from the state’s second largest school district.
Elgin District U-46 Superintendent Tony Sanders has been named the next Illinois State Schools Superintendent. Governor Pritzker calls Sanders an extraordinary choice and says Sanders’ breadth of experience in District U-46 and his entire background have prepared him for his new role.
Sanders will start his new job in late February. "As the superintendent of one of Illinois largest school districts, he intimately understands the strengths, the policy history, and the challenges of our public schools," said ISBE Board Chair Dr. Steven Isoye.
"At U-46, he has championed equity, expanded opportunities for students, and brought innovative new programs to the district."
Among his accomplishments at U-46 was the expansion of the Dual Language program and launching full-day kindergarten. Sanders will be replacing State Superintendent of Education Carmen Ayala who retires Tuesday.
