NW suburban animal shelter floods, stranding dozens of pets

WHEELING (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Dozens of cats and dogs spent the night in a different location after their Wheeling shelter flooded.

A water main break early Wednesday morning sent nearly two feet of water rushing through Heartland Animal Shelter.

Cats climbed to higher ground and anxious dogs stood on their hind legs in kennels as brown water rushed in and sent packages of paper towels floating, as seen in a security video.

Executive director Jennifer Schlueter told CBS-2 thankfully none of the animals was hurt.

“It also speaks to the resilience of animals and why we love them so much…They are survivors,” Schlueter said.

The shelter is looking for help in the form of foster families for the animals and donations of supplies and cash to help pay for repairs that are expected to keep it closed for at least a month.
